Key Components of Hillside School's Specialized Instruction:
- Hillside uses specific multi-sensory teaching methods that current research indicates is most effective
- Students work in groups of 4 students to 1 teacher, based on age and skill levels.
- Instruction is completely individualized and based on a precise assessment
of specific skills involved in reading, written language and math. Such an assessment allows the instructor to teach specifically to the correct
“starting” point of each student.
- Material is presented sequentially in small, manageable amounts. Each skill is fully mastered before progressing to the next skill or task.
- Immediate feedback and frequent charting of progress reinforces correct responses and increases self-esteem. This also engages the student as an active participant in the learning process.
- Our curriculum utilizes current knowledge about effective learning strategies: prompts, cues, mnemonic devices, verbal rehearsal and questioning.
